Some of my favorite clients come to me saying the same thing:
“I don’t necessarily want to lose weight. I just want to look different.”
They want to feel firmer. Stronger. More confident in their clothes.
And this type of transformation is actually my favorite to coach because it requires precision, not extremes.
It is also my own story with the FASTer Way.
Why “Eat Less and Move More” Doesn’t Work for Body Recomposition
If your goal is body recomposition, meaning losing fat while building muscle, eating less and doing more cardio is usually the worst strategy.
That approach might make the scale go down, but it often leads to:
- Muscle loss
- Slower metabolism
- A softer, weaker look
- Less strength and energy over time
Body recomposition is not about becoming a smaller version of yourself. It is about building a better one.
What Actually Drives Body Recomposition
True body recomposition requires a very specific approach. Random workouts and under-eating will not get you there.
The fundamentals matter:
- Enough protein. Most women are eating about half of what their body actually needs to build and maintain muscle.
- Strategic strength training. Not endless cardio, but intentional resistance work that signals the body to hold onto and build lean mass.
- Carb cycling. Fueling workouts on training days supports muscle growth and recovery while still allowing fat loss.
- Patience. The scale may not move much at first, but your body absolutely will.
Why the Scale Can Be Misleading
I have coached women through transformations where the scale did not change at all.
Zero pounds lost.
But those same women:
- Lost two to three inches off their waist
- Gained visible muscle definition in their arms and legs
- Dropped a full pants size
- Looked leaner, tighter, and stronger
That is body recomposition at work. Fat is being lost while lean muscle is being built, and muscle weighs more than fat by volume.
This is why I do not rely on the scale alone.
How I Track Real Progress
The scale tells a very incomplete story. That is why I track eight different body measurements and require progress photos.
Measurements and photos show changes the scale cannot. They reveal where fat is coming off, where muscle is building, and how your shape is changing over time.
That is where the real magic happens.
Building a Body That Works for You
If your goal is to look more toned, feel stronger, and build a body that supports your lifestyle, body recomposition should be the focus.
This is not about cutting calories lower and lower.
It is about fueling properly, training intelligently, and creating a body that functions better and looks better at the same time.
